We all know that a healthy diet is important during pregnancy.

A SAFE diet is also important during pregnancy.

You might really love uncooked sushi, blue cheese and raw chocolate chip cookie dough

But when you are pregnant, take them off the menu.

They are not safe for you and your baby.

Dangers:

  • Listeria- a bacteria on some uncooked and unpasteurized foods
  • Mercury- found in some fish
  • Miscarriage and other fetal complications can occur if exposed to unsafe foods during pregnancy

TIPS:

  • Heat up or cook your deli meat and hotdogs
  • Meat should be cooked all the way through. No rare or pink meat
  • Fish should be cooked, no uncooked sushi
  • Avoid unpasteurized cheese and unpasteurized milk
  • Wash fruits and vegetables before you eat them
  • Egg cartons and flour bags warn us not to eat raw eggs or raw flour… That means no raw cookie dough or licking the bowl after you make a cake
  • Always wash your hands when you’re handling and preparing food
  • Keep raw and uncooked food away from cooked food to make sure there’s no cross-contamination

If you are experiencing a craving to eat unsafe foods or eat things that are not food and have no nutritional value...          let your doctor know.
